The Cumberland County Board of Education voted down a motion to make face coverings optional. In revisiting the mask mandate, the school board heard from the Cumberland County Health Department Director as well as from school health professionals. While the healthcare workers recommended following CDC guidelines, 7th District Board Member Rebecca Hamby made a motion to make masks optional, citing comments and concerns from several parents, students and staff. The final vote was 4 – 5 with Chairman Jim Inman casting the deciding vote. In other action, the board voted to allow educational field trips, as well as special programs and assemblies as long as current school system guidelines regarding masks and social distancing are followed.
