TN Senate Education Committee Votes For Governor Override Of Local School Leaders

Feb 12, 2021 | 8:11 AM

The Tennessee Senate Education Committee has voted to support a bill that would allow the governor to override local school leaders regarding the closing of schools during an emergency, such as the pandemic.  The bill is aimed at reopening schools in Memphis and Shelby County but critics say it will impact the rest of the state and point out that local leaders are more familiar with the dangers and conditions in their own communities.  If the bill clears both the Senate and the House it will head to the governor for his signature to become law.
