NASHVILLE— The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) has announced the return of Mike Bell to the Agency as Special Assistant to the Executive Director after a two-year stint as the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance’s Assistant Commissioner for Fire Prevention. Prior to his previous role with the state, Bell served as TWRA’s Legislative Director from 2022-2024.
“A lifelong sportsman, small business owner, and dedicated public servant, Mike has always demonstrated a deep commitment to Tennessee’s natural resources and to the mission of this agency, and we are excited to have him back on board,” said Executive Director Jason Maxedon. “His leadership, institutional knowledge, and passion for the outdoors make him an outstanding partner in advancing policy that supports conservation and responsible management of our wildlife, fisheries, and waterways.”
Bell returns to TWRA, effective September 14, to serve as one of the Agency’s liaisons to the Tennessee General Assembly. He will collaborate closely with legislators in both chambers, strengthen key relationships, and help shape and support TWRA’s legislative priorities. Beyond legislative outreach, Mike will represent the Agency across the state—meeting with members, participating in community events, and supporting TWRA’s visibility through engagements and external affairs.

With the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance, Bell led the Fire Prevention division’s seven sections, which includes the State Fire Marshal’s Office, in its mission of protecting Tennesseans and their property.
A native of Bradley County and a resident of McMinn County since 1989, Mr. Bell had a 16-year tenure in the Tennessee General Assembly where he first served as a state representative and later as a state senator. His career included leadership roles as chairman of the Senate Government Operation Committee and the Senate Judiciary Committee. He was recognized for his service to Tennesseans with numerous awards including the Lifetime Legislative Award from the Tennessee Right to Life in 2022 and the Legislative Silver Bayonet Award from AmVets of Tennessee, among others.
Mr. Bell was a longtime volunteer member of Claxton Community Volunteer Emergency Services where he earned his First Responder certification.
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is responsible for protecting, managing, and conserving fish and wildlife species for the benefit of Tennesseans and visitors. The Agency also maintains public safety through law enforcement and safety education on waterways. (Photo Mike Bell courtesy TWRA)
