Officials in Rhea County are investigating the cause of two fires at a chemical company over the weekend.
According to a Facebook post by the City of Dayton, on Saturday at around 10:28 am, an off-duty firefighter noticed smoke billowing from one of Hiwassee Packaging’s buildings in the city’s industrial park. The Dayton City Fire Department along with multiple agencies responded and discovered two fires within the building.
A cholrine leak alert was sent out and a precautionary “shelter in place” order was issued to residents within a half-mile radius while crews battled the blaze.
Crews extinguished the fires by around 1:25 pm and the shelter in place order was lifted.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. There were no immediate reports of injury or the extent of the damage to the building.
