Morgan County emergency officials continue to lead response operations for Thurday’s Norfolk Southern train derailment in the Lancing area, with support from neighboring emergency management agencies, state and federal partners, Norfolk Southern, and response contractors.
As of Friday morning the fire at the derailment site was still ongoing and crews remained active in the area.
Air monitoring is being conducted and Friday morning officials said there was no cause for the public to be concerned.
On Saturday the Morgan County Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency said preventative measures are also being used to help protect water quality, including a boom on the river and aeration devices to help maintain normal oxygen levels.
Because of the remote location and the heavy machinery needed for cleanup, there may be intermittent road closures while equipment is brought in and offloaded.
Please avoid the affected area and follow guidance from local officials.
