Beginning November 1st, you will be able to text 911 in Rhea County. Authorities say if possible, it is always best to call 911 in an emergency. However, when you can’t talk for someone reason, such as deafness or hard of hearing, or you fear being overheard, then texting is your next best option.
Remember, in the first text send your location and type of emergency. Text in plain English. Send a short message without abbreviation or slang. Be prepared to answer questions and follow instructions from the 911 call taker. If you do not receive a text response, try to contact 911 another way, such as texting a relative or friend who can call 911 for you.
A text or data plan is required to text 911.
As with all text messages, your text to 911 may take longer to receive and may not be received at all.
In an emergency, call 911 if you can and text if you can’t.
