Two construction workers who were trapped under as much as 15 feet of dirt when a trench collapsed Thursday afternoon in Powell, Tennessee have been rescued and are recovering in the hospital. WVLT reports the men were digging to lay utility pipes when the trench caved in around noon. It took about 6 hours to rescue the first man and about 8 hours to rescue the second. Rescuers had to work slowly to make sure they did not further injure the men, cause more dirt to pour into the trench or endanger those who were digging them out. Both men, described as in their 30’s, were taken to UT Medical Center in stable condition Thursday night.
