Two Trapped In Powell, TN Trench Collapse

Update: 5pm Central, the first person has been freed from the trench and will be rushed to the hospital.

Update: 4:30pm Central, the first person has been freed from the waist up, sedated in serious condition, and it could still be another hour before his is transported to the hospital.

The second person is conscious and rescuers have established communication with this victim.  This man is considered in critical condition and it could be 4 to 5 hours before this second victim is freed from the trench.  There are concerns about hypothermia for both men as temperatures continue to drop.   Rescuers are on their stomachs trying to scoop dirt away from the victims.

Around 4pm Eastern Time on Thursday, two construction workers remained trapped in a trench collapse in Powell, Tennessee.  WVLT reports the men were digging to lay utility pipes when they became trapped under 15 feet of dirt around noon.  Officials have had contact with one man; they have had no contact with the other man.  Officials hope to have both men rescued by 6pm Eastern Time Thursday.
