The State Chief Medical Examiner reconciled outstanding death certificates with COVID-19 as an underlying cause of death and reports COVID-19 fatalities spanning spring 2020 to December 2021 are 20,644 deaths. As the state works to sort through a backlog of data, the Tennessee Department of Health Dashboard reported statewide coronavirus deaths are 20,388 on Thursday, December 23, 2021. This is slightly lower than the Medical Examiner’s report but it still reflects a single-day increase of 2,174 deaths from COVID-19 across the state. The Tennessee Department of Health says that in the new year, COVID-19 data will be reported on a weekly basis consistent with other infectious diseases.
