Several parents expressed their views on masks in schools during the regular session of the Cumberland County Board of Education on Thursday. While the debate on mask mandates was split evenly among those speaking, Board Chairman Jim Inman did say that everyone is free to wear face coverings if they so choose, but the board is not considering a mandate at this time. Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton was also in attendance and clarified several state requirements regarding virtual learning and funding. Speaker Sexton told the board that as long as there was an option for in-person learning, districts can also offer remote learning options for students who may be quarantined due to COVID-19. Sexton also added that absences due to COVID would not affect BEP funding.
