While responding to a decline in test scores in all subjects among all grade levels in Tennessee, House Speaker Cameron Sexton said he would ask Governor Bill Lee to call a Special Session if schools close this year, require masks or segregate students based on COVID-19 vaccination status. Speaker Sexton also said if school systems close he is “going to ask the governor for legislation to allow those parents in those school districts to take their money for school choice and take their money wherever they deem they need to go.” A video of Sexton’s remarks was posted on his Facebook page with the comment, “Tennessee’s test scores are way down, and our future is at stake! We need students back in the classroom in person with no mandates. That’s our expectation for the new school year.”
